7 million people will benefit from the new minimum wage laws
The U.S. Department of Labor reported that 7 million people will benefit from the increase in the new minimum wage laws that went into effect on January 1, 2015.
There are 29 states plus D.C. with minimum wages that are above the national minimum wage of $7.25.
The state of Washington’s minimum wage of $9.47 will be the highest in the country, while the state of New Mexico will have the lowest minimum wage increase at $7.50.
Last year, President Obama signed an executive order that increased the minimum wage to $10.10 for federal contract workers.
Congress has been divided on whether to increase the minimum wage to at least $10 per hour.
Republicans have argued that a $10 per hour minimum wage will hurt businesses, while the Democrats argue that it will provide Americans with a “living wage.”
Last year, the Senate tried but failed, with a vote of 54-42, to pass a minimum wage bill.
